Bunbury Biennale 2019 is a prestigious art exhibition showcasing the best of contemporary art from throughout the State.
This event is held every two years, occupying the two largest exhibition spaces at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery.
This free-to-attend exhibition opens to the public on Sunday 19 May until Sunday 21 July.
The Biennale is an acquisitive award exhibition that provides an opportunity for the City of Bunbury to secure new works to expand and diversify the existing City Art Collection,
It also presents an opportunity for the artists to be included in one of the State’s most diverse regional art collections.
Thirty-four emerging and established West Australian artists have been invited to produce an artwork specifically for this exhibition.
Selection was based on innovation, ideas/concepts, use of medium and originality with a particular emphasis on cutting edge contemporary art.
Biennale Curator Caroline Lunel said there was an exciting combination of both emerging and reputable artists with national and international recognition.
- “Some have been exhibiting in this event for many years, and we are grateful for their ongoing support,” Ms Lunel said.
- “We are also thrilled to note that female artists have been well represented in this exhibition, as more than half of the selected artists are women.”
Using a variety of mediums and techniques, the artists will be exploring a broad scope of concepts and ideas, ranging from personal stories to more universal and global issues.
Mediums will include video, painting, printmaking, textiles, photography, sculpture and installation.
In addition to the Acquisitive awards, this year the City has introduced a $500 People’s Choice Award and Installers Choice Award.
The Bunbury Biennale highlights the important role art plays in regional Western Australia, and in both building local communities and attracting tourists to the region.
Included in this year’s Biennale will be an exciting public program of artist floor talks as well as workshops.
The community will be invited to attend the exhibition opening on Saturday 18 May at BRAG beginning at 6pm.
The exhibition will be officially opened by Ms Janet Holmes A Court with entertainment provided by award-winning Perth enigmatic and experimental trio Intenso. Entry is free.
BRAG is open daily from 10am to 4pm.
