The City of Bunbury in collaboration with the Greater Bunbury Early Years Network (GBEN) and Nature Play WA will be bringing a fun family-friendly event to Bunbury on Saturday 18 May.
Nature Play in the Park has been developed in alignment with the Draft Bunbury-Geographe Early Years Strategy, and aims to promote health and wellbeing and encourage new ways of learning, all in a naturebased setting.
This strategy, which is due to be endorsed by the City of Bunbury and the Shires of Dardanup and Capel this month will cover four key areas: health and wellbeing, learning, family capacity and collaboration.
Nature Play in the Park activities will include mud-kitchen making, cubby-house building, nature-based art and craft, story time and other interactive nature-play activities.
There will also be a chance for families to link with early years services and programs on the day.
Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said it was important for children to get outside and play.
- “Unstructured outdoor play or nature play has been proven to have many health benefits for children and I encourage parents and carers to take part in this inaugural event,” Mayor Brennan said. “We are excited to be teaming up with the Greater Bunbury Early Years Network and Nature Play WA to bring this event to the Bunbury community.”
According to Nature Play WA nature play is fundamental to a full and healthy childhood.
Nature play is, of itself, an intrinsic good and from it flow benefits in health, cognitive, social and emotional development and in the building of resilience and creativity.
Experience in nature as a child also leads to environmental stewardship later in life.
